![]() ![]() The challenge words are meant to extend the spelling rule, so students should only choose from the challenge words if they have missed fewer than 15 words on both their previous test and the pretest. ![]() Students should have no more than 15 words. They then use the results of the pretest, as well as previous assessments, to choose their spelling words for the week. WORD SORTS is a semantic map strategy that helps students improve their vocabulary and categorization skills and learn to organize. Students take a pretest on Friday over the first 20 words. Each week we will look at words with a specific spelling rule. This year I am working to give students a more individualized spelling experience. The x is not doubled because we do not find an xx pattern in English words (with the exception of the company name Exxon.) Oddball - there is one word, that appears to go in the VC column, but does not have a doubled consonant before adding the suffix. Notice that all of these words have a short vowel sound, and since they already end in 2 consonants, there is no need to double a consonant before adding a suffix.
